Daniel’s cell phone buzzed insistently from the nightstand. He rubbed his fingers into his bleary eyes, trying to orient himself. He was usually an early riser and had a standing alarm set for six in the morning, but last night had kept him up later than usual. A dull throb came from his ankle, which turned into a quick shot of pain when he tried to flex it. Even though it still hurt, it wasn’t nearly as bad as it was the night before. Emily had done an excellent job of bandaging it.

Emily. He sat up in the bed, feeling the empty space next to him. She was gone. His heart sank. Last night he’d felt as though they’d finally reached a new level of understanding after days of tiptoeing around one another. But once again, she’d slipped out of his bed before they could talk about what would happen next.

Maybe he shouldn’t be surprised. Emily was such an unusual mix of contradictions. She seemed so vulnerable at times, yet in an instant, she put on a toughness that was probably born from years of looking out for herself. He wondered what it had been like for her, growing up in the public eye, yet without anyone in the background to watch over or protect her.

He thought about their conversation at the bar, when she’d talked about how much she liked her life in Denver. She’d said that the private practice that she and her friend were building was everything to her. She seemed to have exactly what he’d been searching for for most of his life—a place that felt like home.

He wondered if she ever wanted anything more. He’d gotten the distinct impression, during their conversation, that she was just as antirelationship as he was. For some reason, the thought was upsetting to him. Perhaps it was because of the fleeting look of vulnerability he’d glimpsed crossing Emily’s face at times. The same look that had drawn him in as she was watching the dancers from backstage. It was one thing for him to be cynical about love, but Emily... Somehow, he found himself wanting more for her.

But it seemed she didn’t want more for herself. He sighed, pushing back the bedcovers. Even though he and Emily hadn’t done much talking last night—and he couldn’t help feeling a wry smile cross his face at the memory—he had assumed that they were due for a frank and heartfelt conversation this morning. But she’d slipped out of his room even more quietly this time than the last. True, they’d both made their feelings about relationships perfectly clear last night. Still, he would have thought that they owed each other a conversation. Whatever this was, they were more to one another than just a one-night stand at this point.

At the very least, he wished he had some way of knowing how she felt after last night. Having to guess was absolute torture. Because it wasn’t as though he was about to sail away to some other port of call.
